In three months we shall be practically destitute and will have to give up the small flat that i rent and ask them to in a home of sorts.

us

Before the war I was locally employed by the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank and had a very large department to control over 900 chinese a day. We were in Stanley camp on 14 ozs rice a day and we sold ev rything in the way of jewellery etc. to help keep the wife alive.

Both invalided here (all i had no shoes. shorts with about 50 patches and half singlet.

The bank asked me to resign as i was to old and not fit as regards health, they granted me about 850 pounds this has been used in furnishing this small flat and buying all new clothes etc. and bedding etc.

I had a job for about four months caretaker of sixteen flats but it was to strenuous especially trying to cut three lawns etc.

Misfortune overtook us last year wife had a major operation on the stomach and it cost me £8.12 odd per week also surgeons fees etc. althougher £297.0.0 since then constantly ill under the docter and finally last december a big operation for cancer one the breast which was taken off so that was the last of my savings and we are now in dire distress unless i get help. I used to let one room to help with the rent but unable to do so now as i am badly crippled from an old war wound in the leg. I have barely enough to pay another four months rent at two pound ten per week. This letter is the absolutely the truth and any one can call and see for their selves.

I very humbly ask you Sir to help us both with a grant to put us on our feet especially for the wifes sake. Please ecuse errors on the type which i have borrowed, also had the misfortune to lose sight of right eye.

Finally Sir may i say that i think the authorities should give me a little consideration having fought in the four wars for my country.
